Laser Hair Removal

CUTERA COOLGLIDE:

Clients can achieve significant permanent hair reduction with laser hair removal. Here at our facility, we utilize the Cutera CoolGlide system for hair removal. Our CUTERA CoolGlide laser is a Nd: YAG laser that is safe for use on ALL skin types, including darker skin tones! Laser hair removal with our system works best on dark, coarse hair. Laser hair removal is not effective on velous hair (peach fuzz). If you are unsure about whether or not our laser will work on the hair you hope to remove; we recommend scheduling a free consultation. We will be more than happy to help! 951.588.1652.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Almost all areas of the body may be treated with laser hair removal, including: including face, legs, underarms, arms, and back. Laser hair removal can also be done on more sensitive areas such as chest, nipples, and bikini/Brazilian area.

WILL LASER HAIR REMOVAL GET RID OF ALL THE TREATED HAIR PERMANENTLY?

The short answer is No. Laser hair removal is over-promised as being “permanent” and implies that “you will never have to shave, wax, tweeze, etc.” ever again – it’s just not possible. Single hairs may be permanently removed if the follicle is destroyed. That single follicle will not re-grow. You can expect about 70%-80% of the hairs to be removed. The remaining hairs should be more fine, thin, and lighter in color. Results always vary and hormonal fluctuations can significantly affect response to laser hair treatments. (Conditions such as PCOS for example).

Over time your body will develop new hair follicles so that new hair growth will occur. This is why we recommended that after finishing the initial six treatments; you do maintenance/touch-up treatments every 4-6 months so that new hairs are targeted. LHR does not work on blonde, light brown, red, gray, thin/fine “peach fuzz” hair, and/or white hairs; DARKER and COARSER hair with lighter skin yields the best results.

*Please schedule a free consult to determine if you would be a good candidate for laser hair removal. (Especially, if you are considering treatment of FACIAL HAIR).

HOW DOES IT FEEL?

Some pinching and stinging may occur during the procedure; however, the level of discomfort may be so mild that no pain medication is necessary. Numbing cream is offered for an additional fee to decrease the level of discomfort when treating sensitive areas such as the Brazilian area.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL IT TAKE?

The number of sessions needed varies, but on average it can take 6-12 sessions (sometimes more). Factors such as hair density, color, thickness, and growth speed can affect the number of sessions needed. It is not uncommon for individuals to need extra treatments to achieve optimal results. Treatments are scheduled 4-6 weeks apart.

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

  • SHAVE before your treatment. However, the area must not be irritated so shave gently and use shaving cream or conditioner for tricky areas.
  • Sunscreen: A broad-spectrum sunscreen is recommended, and sun avoidance must be practiced if hair removal is planned for exposed sites.
  • Bleaching cream: A bleaching cream such as hydroquinone (Solaquin Forte) may be prescribed to patients with darker skin types or recently tanned.
  • NO Plucking, waxing, or electrolysis: AVOID these activities. Research has shown better results with simply shaved hair
  • Skin: If your treatment is on your face, DON’T WEAR MAKE UP. Also, NO SELF-TANNING PRODUCTS on any areas to be treated! It will mess with the laser’s effectiveness.

DAY OF TREATMENT:

  • Cleansing and Makeup: The area to be treated should be clean and free of makeup, creams/lotions, deodorant.
  • Pre-procedure anesthesia: If desired, a layer of a topical anesthetic cream (e.g., Emla, ELA-Max, lidocaine) can be applied to the small area and Brazilian/bikini treatments for 30 minutes to one hour before the scheduled laser treatment for an extra charge. Large areas can be numbed with ice packs.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Ice packs can help reduce post-treatment redness and swelling.
  • Topical antibiotic ointment application twice daily is indicated if any skin injury has occurred.
  • Avoid any trauma, such as picking or scratching of the area.
  • Avoid sun exposure to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation
  • Use sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30.
  • Makeup CAN be applied the next day unless blistering or crusting has developed.
  • Shedding of hair casts (especially on the face) may be seen. The damaged hair follicle is often shed during the first week of treatment. Understand that this is NOT a sign of hair regrowth.

SIDE EFFECTS AND RISKS:

  • Most common: Redness, follicular swelling (bumps), patchy hair growth (patchiness lessens with each treatment)
  • Skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation)
  • Discomfort, soreness, itching, folliculitis
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Herpes virus reactivation
  • Burns/Blistering
  • Infection
  • Failure to achieve the desired result due to hormonal changes
